The medal on the right bears a striking similarity to the one in the centre, but in fact, it would appear to be larger than the other two and the Runes on the reverse are different.
        Hmm!...interesting.

          yes the right is larger.

the diameter is 42 mm, i have bought this medal in this forum.

i have send pictures to helmut weitze, he write me this medal is ok, the value is higher then the normal size.

all 3 are good, the finish on the P&L is a bit worn but these are easy to find near mint condition. the deschlers are both very nice ones and that larger one is very rare, now for the 12 year!

Aha! I knew I had seen it somewhere before.
I had originally thought that the larger size was part of the pantographic reduction process, but judging by the difference in the Sigrunen, this is not the case. I honestly don't know what to make of this one, but, I do think that the colour and detailing compare favourably with the 38mm version [of the alleged 'Deschler ' type].
The thread that you have linked to, shows part of Mr. Ailsby's book which refers to a larger version of this award...I do not have access to this publication, so (assuming that not everyone has carried out their threats to put all copies of said authors' literary works to the flame) I would be interested to know the full content of this particular reference. From what I can see of the scan from the aforementioned publication, there is a suggestion that the 42mm variation could have been a first striking of the medal.
Incidently, the original Diebitsch design for the 8 year SS-Service award called for it to be a silver coloured medal with the obverse showing a swastika and the SS-Sigrunen, but the design was ammended six months later (to what we now all know and love) and I have not, as yet, seen any evidence that the former conception ever progressed beyond the design stage.

Thanks for posting the scan Wini.
The second theory (as referenced by Mr. Ailsby) doesn't exactly hold water any more than the first one, due to the fact that (as I have stated above) the original design for the 8 year was to be in Silver. With the 4 year being bronze, there would have been very little possibility of mistaking the two.

I just noticed that the central medal in your display has the jump ring soldered slightly off TDC. which is the first time that I have seen this on an alleged 'Deschler' type SS award.

This is from an original P&L catalogue.

                        Note the ring.

very interesting Robin, looking at those if I saw them today I wouldn't touch either! Not only is the ring different but also the die- look at the wreath binder on the 8 year- totally different from what is accepted. There is obviously still much to be learned on the ss medals

                            I totally agree.

I have always thought that this picture from the P&L catalogue bears a striking resemblance to one of the more common cheap, cast, repros that we see today.

Here is another photo from a period publication, which shows a round suspension ring...this time on a 12 year (shown next to an original example of the same variation from my collection). The award itself is totally different than the version which is most often encountered in collections, proving that there was not just one maker of the 1st. & 2nd. grade SS-Service Awards.
