    HA PAB-Great? Not so great??

    Hello all,

    I've been looking at a panzer badge but I don't recognise the maker mark. It looks like a stylised D with a squat H on top of it. I did a search and it sounds like this is actually a stylised A and H for Herman Aurich. I know very little about this maker, does he always use this symbol?

    The badge itself has a very unusual hinge assembly, I'm really not sure how to describe it adequately and i have no idea if it's correct. Does anyone have a photo of one of these panzer badges that I can study? I'm thinking of getting the badge but I'd really like to learn a lot more about it before I do.

    The makers mark is stamped in relief which I think is correct but are there any other important characteristics that would give me a better idea of the badge I'm considering getting?

    Any help would be great, thanks!

    Hi Sara,


    Based upon your description this would be AH for Herman Aurich. Here is an example of an Aurich PAB for you to compare it to.

    Also look at this thread for some other nice examples and some info on the two known fakes of this PAB

              Hi Sara,
              Yes, Aurich used this logo on other badges they produced as well, sometimes in conjunction with the firm name.

                Thanks everyone for the great response, and that was a really useful link you posted Phillipe. Thanks for all the photos as well

                From memory the badge seems to be a good one. The hinge/catch/pin set up matches the original examples. On the metal within the ring that the hinge is set in, there are horizontal lines, like little ridges. I couldn't see them in any of the photos except for Franks gorgeous minty example on the other thread. Does anyone else have these?

                The badge I looked at was in the 'subdued' finish but it's in vgc, pretty minty. The finish of the badge is actually most similar to the fake that J Temple West has posted in the other thread, I'm not sure if that's significant?

                It comes in a carton but it doesn't have any marks on it unfortunately. The makers mark is correct and in the right position. I don't remember the back being scooped, I could be wrong but is it a definite no-no if it's flat?

                Without a camera I can't remember the obverse very well, I'm hoping to loan one soon but really need to get one - I'm really struggling without one!

                  Sara, as a general rule flat backed PABs are bad with one exception but it escapes me at the moment. HA PABs are never flat.

                      Hi Don,

                      That would be the marked FLL.

                      But be carefull this isn't the only original flatback. There are at least two more The Kupal and the massive zinc "Porsche" PAB's

                          Dear Sara,

                          The horizontal lines in the little magnetic round plate of the hinge are in most cases there and considered textbook Aurich PAB.
