    TDB, repaired original???

    Hi folks!!!

Today I found this funny looking TDB in the Internet. The owner sells it with a copy coa from Detlev. The black border runs in the right direction, but there´s no space between the lower black border and the tank. The tank is not magnetic.

Looking at the back, it seems the backplate broke on the left and right side and the owner repaired it. So the tank in front felt down a bit. Would this be an explanation???

    Tell me your opinions.

    Regards

    Thomas

Do you think the tank was reattached at some point? Or has there been shrinkage of the cloth?

          Hi deejay!!!

Thanks for your reply, but isn´t the complete stripe too small for the tank??

          regards

No, the backing looks okay just (badly) damaged. We are clearly dealing with a type 1 tank and not the so called Austrian copy of the 1970's. The distance between the tank and black lines seem less than mint examples but this doe not worry me because this strip is clearly worn and may have crimped a little or maybe even stretched. Judging by the black stripes (the thread used and stitching manner) the backing is 100% original.

To answer Aff96; yes it looks as if the tank has been removed and applied again at a certain stage. Why do I think this ?

I think it logical that the prongs at first when this tdb was constructed were all straight as could be, then bent down only once on the backing plate which would leave them straight and the tank tightly fitted originally. If you 'open' these one time more and then put them back in place then you will not get them as straight and tight as they were again without damaging the prongs and backing plate.

I agree with Dirk. I also believe that there is a very real possibility of cloth shrinkage of the strip on this one giving the appearance that the tank is too big.

I saw one example (not mine) where the tank was removed at some point and when it was reapplied because of crumping of the material or...the tank wasn't placed properly per specs.

I guess it is wroth somewhere around € 400.00 in this condition (damaged backplate and also missing backing cloth.)
