    Sniper grouping of Josef Weissinger

There has been various references to this grouping before, but I don't think it had it own thread, which it thoroughly desrves.

Josef Weissinger, and he was born in Mauer, district of Amstetten, (now the province of Upper Austria), He was not married and a paper hanger by trade (yes, there is such a profession). He was 1.85 meters in heighth (6'2"), stocky, with an oval face, dark blond hairs and blue eyes.

The Soldbuch was made out at the 3d Replacement Battalion, Infantry Regiment 135, stationed at Ried im Innkreis, Upper Austria (then the Gau Upper Danube - Oberdonau).

Josef Weissinger was assigned to the I.R 135 on the 4th December 1939 according to his soldbuch. Later in the war sometime during 1944 he was assigned to Grenadier Regiment 187.

He was awarded Infantery Assaultbadge in Silver, Iron Cross 2nd and 1st class, Woundbadge in Black, Silver and Gold, and also the very rare Snipers badge 3rd class (see p22 of Soldbuch). The entry for the Scharfschützen Abzeichen is authenticated by Oberleutnant Heinrich Bergerfurth who won the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold 22.3.1945 as Kompanie Chef 6/Grenadier Regiment 184.

The Soldbuch which is included in this group, is possibly the only Snipers soldbuch which still exist today. Even though the Soldbuch is missing the Photo and the pages are lose, it is EXTREMLY RARE

Group consists of the following items:

    1. Soldbuch, with all awards recorded including the Snipers badge 3rd class and further the Soldbuch includes entries of the receipt of a Cammo smock, Cammo net with hooks, Semi-Auto rigle (prob. G43), Rifle scope with pouch, binoculars and close combat dagger.

Soldbuch was issued Dec 1939 and was held on him through the war, and one can see it went through a lot. There are burnmarks, bloodstains, loose pages. Some stamps and front cover have been denazifyed. On second page there is also stampings from French prisoncamp.

    2. The actuall cover that the Soldbuch was worn in.

    3. Document for woundbadge in black, folded once.

    4. Document for Woundbadge in gold, folded twice, and it have split in two parts.

    5. Document for Infantry Assaultbadge in silver, folded once. All documents have been worn with the soldbuch folded and placed in the cover.

    6. Infantry Assaultbadge in Silver, unmarked, catch is broken

    7. Sniper Badge 1st class

    8. Snipers badge 3rd class

Great grouping! That gold wound badge is in excellent shape and love the sniper badges. Too bad that you don't have a photo of the soldier but many groupings lack this feature. Thanks for showing.

Wonderful group Jacques. Classic original sniper awards make this even better.

                          Congratulations!

In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.

Duct tape can't fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound.

The IAB citation is signed by Major Karl Frewer.
