    Pillow Crimped IAB

    Hello there,

This little gem was picked up from another forum member. A pillow crimped IAB with all the usual hardware. Another one to my growing list of IABs.

I appreciate that there is some ongoing discussion as to the maker, being a possible Mayer etc. Has any further progress been made?

Your opinions and thoughts are very much appreciated.

    Regards

    Steve

Hi Steve, nice badge. A nice marble like appearance on the obverse. As for the maker, I cannot help there, although I'm sure there are plenty of theories!

Whoever the maker is, their quality of finish has stood the test of time. These pillow crimps are usually in pretty good shape.

              Steve, very nice IAB

I'm continuing my research into the pillow crimp badges (WBs and IABs), from what I have learnt so far I am fairly certain that B. H. Mayers were not the manufacturer - yes there are marked pillow crimp SWB's with L/18 on them - but I believe Mayers just bought these in and then marked them.

From my research so far, at the moment it looks like there is a possibility that the pillow crimps were made by more than one manufacturer - don't just look at the hardware setup - look at the differences in the fronts of the badges. Come the day I have some definitive evidence I will publish it, but that day could be a while away

I would say a strong possibility. From a purely economic and time-wise view that makes perfect maufacturing sense. Why not cut out the step of soldering on hardware when it can be stamped in, faster and easier?

Besides, all the good soldering guys were probably headed to the Ostfront.

                    Hi Stevie,

Very nice original pillowcrimp IAB. Typical finish and hardware, can't go wrong with "textbook".

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little
