    Hi Den,

    Thanks for the additional pics.

Recently I saw another of these what looks like "chroom plated" JFS IAB's and I agree with Frank it's just a completely different kind of finish than seen on most other JFS IAB's. Just like on the Aurich PAB, JFS seems to have used 3 different kind of finishes, the subdued finish, most commonly encountered and than the frosted an the chroom plated finish.

For a second I hessitated to buy that badge and by the time I made up my mind it was already gone as were the pics that I didn't save. So now I'm not able to check if that one also had a different observe and reverse finish.

Well, my broken eyeball thought that had a good reverse but thought the obverse was bad. Back to the drawing board!

I´m still not so keen on it. Why the frosty finished back but chrome finished front. Also there are still some "swimmy" details.

Why the frosty finished back but chrome finished front?
          Dear Skip,

It is a known finish combination, showing only with truely mint badges and of cours only by certain makers. Check out this AS PAB of mine. Same kind of finish: Obverse chrome, reverse matte silver. A similar thing can be observed on truely mint Iron Crosses 1st class. So the idea of having a shiny obverse with matted reverse is not unusual to Third Reich awards.

          Cheers, Frank

I'm very happy with your comment on this badge, it's for sale at a dutch
dealer and he has three of them for sale at a price of € 75,- I hope that
is a good price for a mint badge like that, so you all think that I can buy the badge without any problems of it beying a fake ?.
              Best wishes. Dennis

                Frank,
That is a beaut! The grassy area is kick ass! You and Philippe have infected me with the PAB bug I think.

Dennis I can't help you sorry. I'm sure the others will steer you right.

                Best, Sal

Perhaps the chrome plated/shiney awards were meant for use on dress uniforms. The US military allows guys to purchase and wear chrome plated badges and insignia on their dress uniform but they have to wear subdued insignia on thier battle dress.

                    Hi Frank,

sorry to disagree but I would not see that as a mint badge. Unfortunatly I am not at home at the moment but all of my mintys are frosty front and back finished. I am the opinion that the ones with shiny fronts have somehow been worked on. Just my opinion mind you.

                      Dear Skip,

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but that AS badge is as mint as it can be and has not been messed with. A closer scan will show you this clearly even when you do not hold it in your hands or never held a similar one. Even the matte reverse finish is typical for AS and can be found exactly like that on the reverse of their Minesweepers.

(Some) RK silver PAB badges have this finish as well. Sometimes you find PABs that have most of this finish gone, but you will still find particles of the "chrome finish) in crevices or unworn areas. That´s proof enough if one ever needed any.

                      Cheers, Frank

This minty sc Zimmermann has the "chrome-like" finish on the front, but a matte finish on the back like Frank's AS.
