Klietmann states that 403 were mentioned officially at the O.K.H.-Heerespersonalamt, but around 650 were awarded. Looks like the exact amount is not known...

Actually, Dorr's latest number is 633 verifiable. However, I think Daniel is probably correct and there were a few more, around 650 or so.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Are the "special" Gold grades awarded by Himmler included in the amount of 633????
          Best regards Thomas.

Hi, am I correct in thinking that this is the number of servicemen awarded and entitled to wear the Gold clasp, NOT the amount of gold clasps produced or officially worn, as a recprient could buy as many clasps as he wished on the strength of the certificate/Urkunde. I know of some guys who would wear an old medal/badge in combat and keep there actual award safe (sometimes) at home. Some had a clasp for each uniform.

              Most likely.

I don't think anyone has actually verified which recipients were among the 81 at Ulm to or the other Himmler ceremonies. However, since these recipients would have to be passed up the chain of command and verfied before getting the clasp, I would feel very certain that all recipients at the award ceremonies are all counted for. There were far more recpients of the gold clasp that did NOT receive their clasp from Hitler, Himmler or Guederian, but simply through the regular chain of command.

Impossible to say how many awarded, but IMO not more than 1000.
