    PAB S&L/Zimmerman question

    Hi,

The same PAB as in this post from 2004 is currently available to me:

    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54553&highlight=zimmerman+pab

It appears at the time of discussion it was considered genuine. In hand and under inspection the PAB shows pitting on the rear of the Swaz as discussed and also in the area circled, the rear of the PAB under the gun turret displays the die flaw mentioned.

The metal is slightly soft and requires exertion to bend it but it will bend. Some areas of the PAB show crisp detail yet others exhibit soft detail. I have checked the forums for further discussion on this PAB but none seems to have occured. I am attending the auction tomorrow where this PAB will be coming up and would like to know opinions on this PAB before going. Sorry I cant find a picture of the rear but the back is exactly the same as in the post above.

    Regards

    Steve

Looks OK to me Steve but the fact that you can bend this badge would definitely bother me.

        Steve.
I orginaly posted on that thread five years ago to the affrimative. It's now five years later and belive me ALOT of water has gone under the bridge. In the orginal thread nothing was said about it being able to bend. Like Dan, this does concern me greatly. At this point in time of my collecting career (main focus PAB's) I would pass. As Don mentioned five years ago about being paranoid I too am at that stage considering all the well made fakes that have hit the hobby within these past years.

          Hi guys,

Thanks for the responses, the badge will bend but it doesnt bend easily, I have read previously that some badges do bend but only under quite a bit of pressure.

          It certainly doesnt bend easily.

          Regards

          Steve

            Hi Steve,

An original S&L PAB (as well as all original, massive zinc badges) will rather break than bend under pressure, no matter how big the pressure. If it bends, it cannot be good.
            Cheers, Frank

                Hello there,

Wow, that one sure does look good for being a fake.

                  Hi William,

I guess it just goes to show that a visual check of an item can only tell you so much. The badge really did look good and it was a very good copy including the required die flaw on the back of the badge. I was tempted to buy it even after I knew it was fake. When you had it in hand though it kind of gave you an uncomfortable feeling that something wasn't quite right.

Well thanks to Frank clarifying the flexibility issue I didn't end up bidding on it. It ended up selling for around $65US.

                  Regards

                  Steve
