    Rare Assmann PAB

    Dear All,

I thought I would share this one, a RARE Aluminium Assmann PAB, I think one of the lightest PAB's ever made. Of interest also is the small ROLLER pin.

    Regards,

    Anthony

        Dear Anthony,

I'm glad you got the beauty

Last Friday I was in Paris, missed all the updates, and just than such this unique PAB turns up. I didn't even know these Assmanns also existed in aluminium but in fact it makes perfect sence taken in to account that Assmann experimented quit a lot with Aluminium for there Luftwaffe badges.

Could you give us an indication of the weight of this badge. With only 14grams the hollow zink cut-out PAB is the lightest I know of but this has to weigh even less I guess.

This find makes it even more of a challenge to find a complete set of Assmann PAB's. You would need six of them now, the silver and bronze version in alu, tombak and zink

Does anybody else owns an Alu Assmann PAB?

          Hi Philippe,

This is not the one from the update that you mention, I have had it for awhile now, the weight is 11.2g

            Dear Anthony,

Sorry should have looked at the pictures I saved of it first, than I would have noticed that it had a different hinge. Anyway makes it even more interesting now these rare badges come with different setups too.

11,2 grams that indeed very lightweight. Don't leave it un attended outside or it will blow away.

I don't suppose you have another one laying arround that you could do without

Hi Anthony. It would seem the weight is about the same for solid aluminum luft badges and the Heer para badge, those weighing about 10.5 - 12 grams. I would think a stamped aluminum badge would weigh much, much less than 11.2 grams Also surprized they would stamp an aluminum badge. Are you quite sure it is aluminum?

                  Dear Jan,

Why am I not surprised hearing that.

For a moment I thought Anthony got lucky during my absence but no mister "après moi la déluge" snaped it up.

Congrats and can't wait untill you post some nice pics of it.

                      Nice badge!
If this is a aluminium badge ,how are the hinge and c-catch attached..?

                          Hi Guys,

The badge was sold to me as an Aluminium, I have several of the Tombac and Zink variety that weigh much more than this one, it is also not Cupal, so not much else it could be, but you never know. The pin, pin block and C hook dont seem to be aluminium, maybe Tombac and that is were the difference lies.

It is very hard to see exactly how they are affixed, what ever it is it is a wonderfull professional job, maybe some sort of epoxy, I just don't know.

                          Regards,

                          Anthony

Hi Anthony. Here are a couple of links about the relative weights of different metals. As you can see, aluminum is quite light in weight as compared to zinc or tombak (basically copper). As I stated, I would expect that a stamped aluminum badge would weigh much less than the one you have.

Although several members have "OK'd" your badge as aluminum... you should "do the math" against the data provided by Philippe for the weight of a zinc badge. Also, do the math for Mike Pinkus's "brass" example on his website. From all appearances, your badge appears to be the same thickness as other stamped Assmann PABs so I would expect it to weigh much less than yours at 11.2 grams, notwithstanding the fact that an aluminum stamped badge could probably not withstand much handling and would most likely be quite bent and distorted. Imagine a badge made from "tinfoil". Not much more than a "tinnie".

Please understand that I am not discrediting your badge. For your sake, I hope the badge is truly aluminum as that would indeed be a rare item. However, the metalurgical facts and the data you have provided here don't bear it out. Since you are relying on the seller's representations, it would behoove you to examine the badge closely for yourself and measure its attributes against scientific data.

Either that...or have your scales recalibrated!

                              Hi Lorenzo,

I am quite happy to discuss the badge, what ever it is it is a wonderfull example of an Assmann type PAB with fabulous detail. I agree with most of what you have said, but as I have stated it is not Tombac Brass or Zink, and the seller in my opinion is one of the most knowledgable dealers in the world, that aside I did have a pic of another so called Aluminium badge sold recently that was solid but unfortunately I have lost the pic, I will try to get it again.

I think that Jan has just acquired one of these so it will be interesting to see what he thinks of his one, again the weight is well under what a Tombac and Zink badge is so we will wait and see.

                              Regards,

                              Anthony
