Looks good to me Rik. S&L, 1.16.2 in Tom's book, if i'm not mistaken. Shame about the backplate, and I'd sort out the zinc pest too before it gets any worse. Nice clasp.

          Hi Rik,

Can only agree with Paul, an original S&L 1.16.2 in my Close Combat Clasp book (see my signature below). You can apply vaseline to the clasp to stop the zinkpest and clean it up a bit.

Do you have the CCC document and if so, what is the date on it?

          Thanks

          Tom
If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Hi Rik, I would highly recommend Tom's book if you are interested in CCC's, and like Tom already said Vaseline is the best cure for Zinc pest.

Thanks for the date Rik. In the CCC book, I put each badge by maker, but then each variant into the order in which I thought it was produced by that maker. Typically, it is thought that CCCs with fluted sheetmetal pins were later in the war than the solid, slender pins like the one found on your clasp. I have been keeping a database of CCCs that have decent provenance and that can be coupled with an award date to see if this theory holds water. Your badge helps to confirm this, since its a solid pin and quite an early award date (anything in 1943 I consider "early" for CCCs since it was only instituted on November 25th, 1942 and probably didn't start handing them out until several months in 1943).

                Thanks

                tom

p.s., thanks for the recommendation Paul

Also would like to add that its good to see some provenance on an S&L CCC. They are very well known to have made badges post-war, so its always good to see one of these come out of a grouping and that have all the characteristics of the other S&L CCCs we consider as wartime-produced. Would love to see the award document or soldbuch if you wouldn't mind posting it for us.

                  Thanks

                  Tom
