GAB by "RS" Opinions/Comments?

Hello Gents,

I recently acquired this GAB and would like some thoughts on it. I actually acquired 2 that are nearly identical. I've never personally encountered one with this maker's mark. Am guessing it is Rudolf Souval...? Your comments and opinions are appreciated!

Dear Adam,

I am glad you are bringing this one up. By many collectors this type of Souval logo is a sign for a true fake on THIS badge, the only accepted Souval logo for a GAB being the edgy, thin letter type.
On other badges however (like the Souval U-Boat or the PAB) it is the general belief that both logos are fine.

I have handled a couple of these round, big logo Souval GABs and can only say that it is my strong conviction that these are just as ok as their U-Boat or PAB brothers.

The originality of a Souval is determined by other factors.

One thing about your badge though: I suspect the obverse to be repainted (and then rubbed). The rest of the original silver finish that is still visible in some spots on the reverse has the original, yellowish silver tone, while the obverse silver has that typical modern silver paint cold, blueish tone to it.

I have a GAB just like this one and when purchased, others on the forum had the opinion that it was good.

Hi Adam,

I agree with Frank and Harry. IMO there is nothing wrong with this type of mm. Most likely the later RS mark which also would explain why this is frequently encountered on post-war RS copies.

I think you'll find it interesting because it also features a copy of the big letter fake RS GAB. For sure different from the one you just posted.

Thanks for your comments and feedback...

Frank: I see what you mean about the badge looking "repainted" but I think it is just my scanner distorting the colour a bit. In person the finish remnants on the reverse seem to have exactly the same colour...

I have another RS PAB acquired from the same source (Canadian Vet). This one was cleaned by the collector I got it from so the finish is a bit different. Note also the very small variations in the obverse detailing. However, identical pin and catch, and RS markings.
