In all my research up to this point, only Juncker had a non-magnetic backplate. All other I have/had are magnetic (FLL, Gablonz, JFS, RS, GWL). Apparently L/53 are not magnetic as well, but have never read that anywhere.

Well I just checked and the backplate on my Silver JFS is magnetic but my Bronze FLL is non-magnetic. Not sure if this means anything in regards to this and no telling when they were manufactured but the silver ccc was awarded in 44, and the bronze was awarded in 43, both are zinc basemetal.

It is commonly accepted that CCC makers used different hinges, catches and pins called "findings", basically using whatever worked to save on materials and cost. It this is true, than backplate material too could vary. I would expect that most backplates would be magnetic as steel would be cheaper than brass or some other non-magnetic backplate material. James, is the FLL with the non-magnetic backplate the earlier version (sunken in hinge crimping and round wire catch) as opposed to the FLLs most commonly run into with the flat wire catch and sloppy soldering job? If it is, this would make sense to me as using more quality parts earlier in the war. I have always suspected that what I call "earlier" FLLs were the ones with the sunken hinge. I say this because comparing the details on the obverse, the one with the sunken hinge is much more detailed. A non-magnetic backplate on this version would support this opinion.
