    relic ccc

picked this up in a grouping, ground dug on the eastern front. Was wanting thoughts on if it is a bronze, silver, or gold. It appears to have some gold finish on the outer end but it's hard for me to tell which was the original finish.
    thanks

Interesting piece. It's tough to tell from the pics, but I think you have a JFS. Based on the thick pin, no vertical moat crimps (leads me to believe to little tabs on the center), and area around the hinge. That or an FLL, but I'm going with JFS. Can you get close-ups?

Where'd you find this piece? It's neat

Tried taking some closeups but they turned out blurry, I'll try a little later again. I can see a small square under the pin near the latch, but I'm a little leary about trying to move it. It's solid but I just don't know. Bought it a sale, story was that all this was dug in the same area. Also came with a helmet ... which appears to have traces of white paint under the rust, youth knife, gas mask and cannister mg ammo can, mess kit, buttons, coins, and a few other things.

Well, IMO that makes it a 1st pattern JFS. Nice, interesting pick-up. I wouldn't try moving it all. Just leave it the way it is

Any ideas as of what finish this had on it, or do you need some better pics

Well, now this is pure speculation, but IMO, I actually think it's silver. Very hard to tell with the corrosion. Wouldn't mind to see what others think too.

Any recommendations on cleaning it up, or just leave it alone.

I'm all about leaving things the way they are found other than cleaning up minor rust or zincpest. I'd just leave it, it's a relic.

That was my thought too and I agree that it is a 1st pattern JFS. You can try to clean it with soap and warm water, and then put vaseline on it to try to stop any further corrosion, but I don't think its going to clean up much, its pretty heavily corroded.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little
