    Look at this GAB, bitte

Can anyone offer any opinions or information on this GAB?

    Height: 53.75 mm
    Width: 44.5 mm
    Weight: 29.4 g
    No maker's mark

I was unable to match this piece with any of the examples in the GAB Gallery (which isn't to say that it isn't there....)
    Thanks!

    George,

Looks like a mid- to late-war genuine zinc GAB. I have seen these before.

George I noticed the feathers on the neck are very uneven....now I don't really know if this is good or bad.........I wouldn't think good but I really just don't know. But that is what stuck out for me on the badge.

Also are them yellow/brownish spots suppose to be the remains of the finish?

Based on the pics alone, I'd definately give it a second look, there's nothing glaring wrong with it from what I can see. You can find variations among originals all the time.

          Ron,

That's an interesting observation on the neck feathers. I hadn't noticed that, but I'll keep it in mind when looking at other examples. As for the yellow/brown spots, even with a loupe I can't tell what they are. But I don't think they're supposed to be finish. There are (barely) some traces of a silver finish remaining, though.

My understanding is that Frank&Reif has no space between bayonet and wings and grenade and wings, I can post one if needed.

Ron is absolutely correct, F&R had no space beneath the wings, except on the fakes. I can post pics of ones I dug if need be. This one is definitely not a Frank and Reif GAB.

Not sure of how this original dug example matches up, sorry for the quality (of the badge and pics), but looks exact I think?

                    My Mistake, sorry !

Sorry, the first photo fooled me, I didn't see that the spaces were cut out below the eagle, the second photo (back side) I missed it again.
But its my understanding that Frank & Reif did make a General Assault badge without the cut out spaces below the eagle, solid back badge.
Follow this link to Mike Tuckers web site, he refers to it on this page.

There must be something there, because I thought it looked like a F&R as well when I first saw it. Correct information in that F&R GAB's dont have the cutout, but it does strike a strong similiarity.

I think its the fat wings.

Yes the outline of the wings are thick but actually that was another thing that kind of bothered me as it seemed they were too thick, and plus the neck feathers and the brown/yellowish spots on the badge. I actually thought it was like a rust of some sorts. When I get off work later or in a day or two I will post pictures of a F & R.

By the way nice badge Mark.

                            Joe,

Your ground dug badge looks similar to mine, expecially aroung the irregular neck feathers, but the spaces above the shoulders (especially the eagle's right) look different.
                            Hmmmm.....

I hope this works, I screwed up the front of the badge but got the back of it.

Any thoughts on it..........well have at it
