    Where are the IAB's?

I wondered why given the criteria of the IAB ,why are there not more issued.I am amazed that whole units where not given this award.I think that the IAB doesnt appear all that often in photographs from the era.Its the same thing with the tank assault badges,You hardly ever see the entire crew wearing these badges, normally just the commander or gunner. Surely entire battalions or regiments or company or even platoons have taken part in assaults again and again in poland, france and the soviet union surly the Iab and the panzer badge should have been bestowed by the thousand. and it would be very much more in evidence in photograghs.
Does anyone know why this simply isnt the case? Was it up to the individual to apply for this?

Peter, it depends on what period photos you are looking at. Pre-Anschluss photos were taken before the badge existed. Even during the invasion of Czechslovakia and Poland, the badge was still either non-existent, and then in it's very early period. During the war years after 1940, photographs were not a top priority, especially studio photographs. Perhaps that has something to do with it? Still, I do see a fair number of them pictured in albums when I get them in.

going by the amount that are usually up for sale, they were awarded in large numbers, even if they dont turn up too often in period photos

Thanks for the info.I have another question or 3.
What was the average time period between the earning and the actual bestowal of the war badges?.Also were they given out at the same time with other awards like the EK2 ek1 etc? were they mostly done at company battalion parades?

I got mine at a company formation. Just kidding! I would imagine that they were given out as any award would be in the military - in a company or battalion formation. Did you ever see Stalingrad (the movie)? I would imagine that is how it went. Since these medals did not require "high" approval, I'm sure the lag between earning the IAB and being bestowed it, was not that long. Totenkopf Rings, for example, had a VERY long lag - six to eight months on average - they had to go all the way to the top for approval!
