    Bandenkampf

    Here's a note from Himmler's diary, 18. December 1941.

He notes that Hitler has ordered that all Jews caught behind the lines are to be 'killed as partisans'.

    'Judenfrage.............als Partisanen auszurotten'.

So, any action to exterminate Jews in the field was regarded as an 'anti-partisan' action.

Worth bearing in mind...........not all 'Bandenkampf' operations were against REAL guerrillas.

    Interesting

    Mr. Lumsden,
Thank you for posting this very intersting entry. Sometimes I think we all need to be reminded what the Third Reich was all about and why so many lives were lost to rightfully end it. We as collectors often get lost in the history of the awards or other items we collect, what individual acts of bravery they may represent or just their intrinsic appeal. But we must and should always come back to the fact that the ultimate source for all of these T.R. trinkets we fawn over - myself included - was something very evil.

          Hi Robin......

          ......Thanks for that!

Mike......extremely well stated. In my opinion the German and Japanese items that I admire and collect are, to me, war trophies. These items were returned home by various Allied troops, who left many of their fellows behind, and enabled us to live in a relatively stable world.

I knew many veterans while growing up and, for the most part, the majority of these 'trophies' were stashed away......out of sight. As a result of their sacrifices Germany's Hitler and Japan's Empire were defeated.

Now that picture really turns my stomach! And I think you've made your point Robin. If any of the 'awards' that we all collect and admire epitomises the evil regime that produced them, then this is probably the one.<O</O

Just "Ordinary Men" to steal Browning's title: Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland. Worth a read as is Goldhagen's research...

We put them out of business and paid a dreadful price to do so. If we ever forget that, or allow anyone else to forget that, then we will deserve the world we will live in.

                      Hi guys !

I only want to state as follows and hope, that You understand that a little bit: Nobody forces angels like US-american, british, canadian or other people to collect war items of us german (and austrian) thiefs, murderers and rapists...

And for those, who never heard a word of history : It's written by the winners..

And last but not least: Himmler is NOT representative for Germany and german people.

                      Kind regards,

                      Peter

P.S.: The photo in this thread is a well known photo-fake. It was printed in dozens of books with different underwritings. That doesn't mean, that it COULDN'T have been a real one - but in THIS case, it is not.

Thanks Peter for the heads up on this photo.I will tell my 82 year old family friend that lives in Russia that had his hands cut off by the German army(not the ss) because he stole a potato because he was hungary. That it is all a big mistake and that the German army was right after all they invaded his country and killed his family by starvation and hanging them up like dogs and making them a slave to the greater German Reich. That it was all a big mistake.I know he will be glad to hear this.

                            Robin,

that is a very important document.
                            is it in your collection?
I know that David Irving based a big part of his book 'Hitler's War' on different war diaries of important 3rd Reich personalities. Under it also the diary of H. Himmler.

The picture in post number 6 is indeed a well known faked photo, although there are indeed 'good ' (like in nr.13) photo's of various atrocities.

Please folks, don't get caught in that game of who was good and who was wrong.
Just stay to the topic or it will get closed

                              And this one?

This is how some of the 'Bandenkampabzeichen' days were tallied up, in 'actions' like this.
