I realise this is an old thread but i was hoping Albert can clarify some his statements.

Idont understand what part "welding" plays in badge construction.I assume he means "soldering"
My point is that "welding" is not "soldering".The two are different.
Which leaves me to my next question,if Albert thinks "welding" in this case is "soldering",why does he say you cant weld/solder zink?

Numerous hinges, catches and catch baseplates are directly
    soldered onto zink badges.
dozens of references to application techniques to zink are available

So are you using welding and soldering as the same term?

      Keifer,

First, I answered your pm. Secondly, yes I used the two terms as synonyms. Certainly wrong but still very clear in the context.

I said zink could not be welded at that time because it apparently could not under the existing conditions of the majority of industry pertinent to our subject. Sure one could solder zink but the connection is too weak. Therefore, crimping and baseplates were used.

Indeed in some cases soldering was applied drectly. But here we have a problem with what we agree to call Zink and not so much with "welding" vs."soldering". As I have written in some other thread the quality of zink alloys varied and still varies greatly from high quality to "Kriegsmetall".

Keifer, I hope I could clarify this. If you can add more technical input, I would love to read it.

      Best regards,
      Albert

        Hi Albert
I misread it as though you said you couldnt solder to zink at all.

I understand what you mean now.
        Regards Keifer
