    Balloon Badge Revisited- Pics!?!?!?

I recorded the SS program from the History Channel last night. The segment on Himmler had a video sequence that appears to be the one everyone is talking about.

I used my wife's WebTV unit to capture a few frames from the VCR tape.

Check them out- Let the debate begin!

looks like an Iab, para badge and wound badge to me, but I have to squint to come up with that.

      Hey John,

Neat snaps. But it's too hard to see the details. If the originals are higher resolution, or you can take new ones at a higher res, can you post them?

If you need any help in resizing them, you can email them to me.

I missed the Himmler show, only saw part of the Heydrich one. I would be interested to see the footage you captured, I’ve seen part of it on film when he is talking to the HJ kids.

      Best Regards,

      Fred

Fred, I'm afraid that the WebTV unit is only able to capture pics in one size. If someone was to order the DVD of the program, I am sure that better pics would result.

I do have to admit, when I was watching the program on my 32" RCA TV & freeze-framing the sequence, that my first impression was that the bottom badge was a Parachute Badge too.

          Guys,

Last night I saw a show on the History Channel about Himmler. They showed very clear footage of the Chancellary Garden award ceremony. The badge this guy was wearing was clearly a Luftwaffe Paratrooper Badge.

Isn't this the footage taken on 20th April 1945 at the Chancellery? Supposed to be the last known film footage of AH, the one were he tweaks the HJ kid's ear a little further down the line.

And yes it certainly looks like a LW para badge, seems to be two different colours visible.

              Hi Guys,

Just blew it up a little, doesnt whatever is in the wreath looks to thick on the left lower side of the wreat to be a Para badge. On a para you would expect to see the heavier part to the right upper side.

In my humble opinion a FJ badge, not looks like the Ballon design.

I like this kind of discussions, I think the Ballons affair never end.

                  A Two-tone Badge In Film

The Army Balloon Observer's Badge was NOT a two-toned badge in the only known approved designed badge, the 1957 version, or ANY of the monstrosity hump backed fakes passed off as original badges. The badge being worn by the HJ Leader is a two-toned badge. This is clearly obvious from the original stills as well as in the enlargements. The affair has ended for everyone except those who believe in the tooth fairy.

                    There’s no tooth fairy?

Does that mean no Santa Klaus either?

I would say that unless the two tapes I have on order can show without a doubt the HJ Leader wearing the Army Balloon Observer's badge, (or as Sir Ailsby said, "Again not to be over optimistic, I would give it 85 percent chance of being a Balloon badge", then we not only not have a "Santa Klaus", but we no longer have a "Kyle Klaus or an "Warrior Klaus" either. For sure all the hot balloon gas will be dissipated and never again will the Army Balloon Observer's badge theory rise again.

Congratulations John right still, the falt earthers are still at it:

1.John has correctly produced the right still.

                          2. The video fotage is more clear with a bulbous ,pronounced snout for the front of the Balloon.

3.Why is a HJ leader wearing a Luftwaffe Para Badge, as you suggest Bill, with an Heer IAB ??

4.It is difficult to decipher from the blurred images agreed, but hat off to John
                          TOP MAN !!!

                          5. Until a better resolution is found we are all scrambling in the dark.

6.Bill be comforted in the knowledge that your allusion to fairies, whilst
understandable, nonetheless sounds like patronising claptrap.Sit in one's ivory tower and the fall becomes more unbearable when it comes !!!!

                          7. You cannot, and should not make judgement on these blurred stills. You have ordered the videos....then tell me I am full of s..t.But I get the impression you are so blinkered you have already decided.

8.Nothing personal Bill ...keeps the blood flowing, would be boring if we all agreed.
                          Kind regards Kyle

My blood is flowing quite well, but you didn't comprehend exactly what I said. I said:

"I would say that unless the two tapes I have on order can show without a doubt...."

I will also add that I have a large plate of bitter old crow and a tankard of English Ale ready for someone to eat when the proof of the pudding is revealed. And you are right, I have already decided and feel most confident that I will NOT be dining on the bitter tasting old bird either.

Possible scenarios. He was one of the Gebirgsjäger who jumped in North Norway but not at Narvik. Former SS-FJ Btl. 500\600. Brandenburger ?
                              Or
He gained his FJ badge earlier in the war and seeing as this is an awards ceremony he has picked up an EK1 and IAB whilst fighting as a HJ leader (in a volksturm unit?)

More to the point if it was a balloon observers badge wouldn't he be more likely to have a GAB as he would have had to have been an artilleryman serving in a beobachtungs abteilung or the like.
