Well, Marc's Flak book has me in a frenzy. I took (yet) another gamble, and purchased this R.S. Flak badge from Hamburg.

The dimensions match up to the specs that Marc provides. This badge, however, is a bit lighter (27,8 g vs 29,6 g). Everything else seems to match up properly. I don't think the weight is a 'rule out' factor.

I'm not sure, is this the version with the 'Variant Catch', as the Flak Badges book describes?

I would not worry much about the weight. If the badge is lighter, it indicates it is an earlier variant of the die. Due to the wearout of the dies, more zinc was pressed into them, which leads to more weight.

Nice Souval! What is magnetic on the hardware? Just curious because of the oxidation. I would not worry about the weight - in my book I gave an example but as I said you have to take the tolerances into account.

Makes sense and I agree. If it was 10 grams more with a different 'modern' basemetal ..... well, that's a different story altogether!

The Magnetism Test Results:

The pin is 'hitting' into (even more than 'jumping'!) the magnet, like Ma Deuce APIT rounds against a cinderblock wall. I venture to say with a very high Fe content. And that is at 12.5mm >. The hinge test is negated to to the relative proximity of the pin. And the catchplate is too small for my magnet. Maybe I can find another. I think it is safe to say, judging by the rust in the images, that all hardware is, well, highly reactive to the magnet test!

Nice badge Mark and nice finish, looks like a keeper.

I have found a good way to test the magnetism of the hinge, put the magnet on the obverse face of the badge. If the hinge is magnetic, you will feel a slight pull through the badge. The pin is too far away from the reverse surface to pull in the magnet from the obverse IMO.

Ofcourse, if your "magnet" is too big, it can attract everything around it.

Well, I for one am glad to see that Mark is spending all sorts of money BEFORE the MAX...it gives us other guys some hope that he will not have any money to spend AT the MAX, thus leaving other badges for us.
