Hello all, I am very new to this field and I am wondering if these badges I have are real or fakes. After looking all over internet sites and viewing pictures I am suspect of these items mostly for the reason of the actual pin and the hinge. Of all the ones I looked at none seemed to have what looked like so thin of a pin that look like the end was cut off with wire cutters, nor did any seem to have the hinge type that these have. If I could get some feedback on this I would be grateful. Thanks, Sal

Hi Sal,
Sorry, but Yuri is 100% correct - the badges are all bad/crude reproductions. At least you've been able to figure them out, instead of finding it as a nasty shock. I hope it hasn't been too expensve a lesson.

Hi Sal,
The first dead-giveaway is the abysmal detail on the obverse, especially of the U-boat and Heer Flak badges. Very poor castings. Genuine late war zinc badges did use cast in block hinges, but they are strikingly different from these relatively tall and thin/narrow repro hinges (the Euro collectors have a special derogatory name for this type of repro, but I can't remember it offhand). The very thin needle pins which protrude well beyong the bottom of the badge is another easy giveaway. This is the type of repro I'd expect "pwotcywytz" (or however you damnwell spell it) from Poland/Canada would sell on eBay. This is also the type of fake which is well covered in Robin Lumsden's basic book "Detecting the Fakes" - you should be able to pick up a genuine copy of this book from eBay!

Thanks for the info Mike! I have actually been looking for that book for a while now and will keep up my search. If you get a chance I put up a picture of some weird fallschirmjaeger/fliegerkorps badge in the fallschirm jaeger forum. It is really interesting but unfortunatly I got it in the same batch of stuff so of course I am suspicious. Is there any book about fakes with color pictures? I want to avoid this in the future. I also got a LOT of other stuff with these junk pieces many of which have the same hinge and pin type so I will be posting pictures of them soon, most likely to my own chagrin. When I do I would love your input on them. Thanks again for your time.
