    Gab

I love the look of this General Assault Badge. This was a direct pickup from a U.S. veteran (PFC) of the 482nd Medical Collecting Company- 180th Medical Battalion.
The base material is zinc, but the badge has a copper under-coating below the silver finish. Because of the copper under-coat, the silver finish has held up fairly well.

    Best regards,
    Tom

        Hello Daniel,

Thank you, but I don't think this badge is cupal. It is made of zinc and weighs 31.8 grams. If I'm not mistaken, cupal is copper-clad aluminum and so the badge would be very light if it was made of cupal.

        Best regards,
        Tom

          Hi Tom,

Great looking GAB, and I agree with you that it is copper coated zink. I think you can see the copper coating on the pin, hinge and catch too, no? I wonder if they plated everything with a thin copper coating to stand up against the elements and hold the finish better, even though these aren't made from zink, but probably steel and had the same effect of sealing them.

          Tom
If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

                    Hello Tom,

Yes, all of the attachment hardware shows copper where the silver finish has been worn away. In fact, copper might be the base material for all of the hardware because none of the components are magnetic. (I was actually surprised that the components were not made of copper-coated steel.) If these pieces are made of copper, then the copper was definitely hardened because everything is very rigid. The pin will not bend but with considerable pressure.

And thanks to everyone for your comments about this badge!

                    Best regards,
                    Tom

                      Hello Jeff,

Beautiful badge. Could you check the hardware on yours with a magnet?

                      Thank you and best regards,
                      Tom

Here are a couple of pictures showing copper where the silver finish has worn away. In the second picture, the red arrows point to areas where green patina (indicative of copper) is evident.
