TDB in Gold on a wrapper

I've had a Pz wrapper for a colonel in my collection since 1978 or so, which has a TDB in gold attached. I've never really given much thought to the TDB untill I started to read threads here in the WAF, which encouraged me to try to verify its authenticity, and if possible- assuming that the TDB was sewn on during the war- find out if there is the possibility of identifying the officer to whom the jacket belonged (so far, I got the impression from past threads that the list of winners of the TDB in gold is too full of holes to allow such identification with any certainty).

To me, the tank appears to be a type 3 and it's magnetic. Because it is sewn onto a black cloth backing with black thread right through the black borders above and below, the sewing thread really tricks the eye into not seeing the ///// pattern in the black band easily, so I added a photo though bad, that brings out this pattern.

    All opinions wellcome

I have doubts about this TDB. The wrapper would need to be discussed down in the uniforms forum.

          Nick,

I concur with Don's assessments ..... both of them. If the TDB is bad, and in my opinion it is, then '?'s and flags go up with the rest of the ensemble.

I'm no Panzer Wrapper specialist, so I'll watch from the sidelines on that topic.

          Good luck!

            Hi all,

here is my opinion: as far as I can tell from these pictures, I think the tank is okay (a correct type 3) but the backing material not.
To be sure the measurements of the tank are needed. Anyway this one has been messed around with without any doubt !

Thanks for your opinions. I have no doubt about the jacket, so to me it's a question of whether the TDB was added. I'm also unsure of the golden braid, but so far as I understand from the old threads, serious repros of tanks made as far back as in the 70s appear to have been limited to the Austrian fake which was of a different tank type. Did they fake the 3rd style tank that far back?

deejay, we were posting at the same time. Thank you for confirming the point I was trying to make regards the tank. So is the braiding a known repro type?

I doubt it, in fact I have not seen a reproduction type 3 (yet). Regarding the backing, it might as well be the 1957 used type.

I think the wrapper should be discussed as well. Perhaps that will shed some light on to the originality of the accouterments.

                    Don,

That was my gut feeling too. But Nick said he 'had no doubt about the jacket', so I assumed he has had it verified as OK.

Of course, I was thinking the worst ...... put together.

                    Regards,
