I have a CCC that I could use a review on. It looks good, but appears to have been painted at one time. Looks like the pin has been soldered as well at one point..

Hello Ken,

like you did point out your self it has had the hinge repaired and it has definatly recieved a new coat of paint.

Hi Ken,

I agree with Hans & Don, an original clasp that has been repainted. They didn't even bother to remove the backplate when it was refinished, so like Don said, its probably some type of cheap spray paint that can be removed quite easily. Who knows, there might be some original finish left underneath that might have survived.

This is a rare type of FLL clasp, with the die flaw on the grenade handle.

Hi Ken,

I would try being brave and stripping off the silver paint. If you screw up the process, you can always paint it silver again, or gold!

I would use acetone or lacquer thinner. I would work a section at a time with a soft toothbrush. It might go quickly, or it might be slow going. Obviously, with slow going, you'll get through the silver 'skin' and stop!!! ...... Just before you get into the original finish.

I'd rinse the whole badge under tap water every once in a while, just to neutralize the process, and give you time to see what you did right, or wrong, before proceeding.

Thanks for the confirmation everyone. I'm not sure how far I'll go with it. I am planning to sell it but want to be sure of my opinions on it before I posted it. Hopefully the next owner will have the skill and patience to restore this to where it should be!
