GAB is it a Mayer

Hi Everyone,

I just got this GAB today and it kind of looks like a Mayer. My only concern is the hinge. The edges seem to be more rounded that cut. Also the cut out areas on the badge seem a bit rough. It weighs about 16g. my scales are that accurate though so it might be a bit more.


Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I actually don't think this is a Mayer but the unknown maker 2 from Frank’s book. The arrows show where I came to the distinction. On a Mayer it the third oakleaf cluster on the right side is round and not flat and if you look at the first oakleaf cluster on the left side actaully touch the first acorn.

Really? When did this come out? It would make sense because it's almost the same as the Mayer but not as nice. Sounds reasonable.

Frank posted an update on his website a while back. These were made in England I believe.

I just checked Frank's site and I saw one under the reproduction section that looks similar but it's defiantly not the same badge. Here's a picture of it. Frank says on his site that he believes that the reason this particular one is a reproduction is because of the reverse hardware. Here's a link to it.

Since Frank posted that update I believe the maker of these was identified. Besides the reverse setup (which can be changed) the materials were wrong. Is the first badge posted made of tombak or something else?

Hi Don,

I can't really tell but the piece looks like it's all white metal. There are a couple of yellow spots, but I think they are just stains on the surface of the piece. There is no wear to the high areas.

I checked Franks book before posting it here and the Mayer was the closest I came up with.

Compare the details in the reverse side stamping with the pics in Frank's book on pages 70-72 and 214. Yours is the unk maker #2.
