Hi guys,
Thanks all for the responses. Giel was the first to hit the nail on the head, this is a refinished clasp. My first clue was that the backplate was non-magnetic, but the size and finish is an exact match to Juncker CCCs, so it was probably taken from an original Juncker clasp. As I looked at the crimps closer, sure enough the two on the right side have been cleverly replaced. I can see where the original crimps were cut off, probably to be able to install this new backplate. Then, new blobs of solder were added directly on top of the old crimps, but were then punched with a sharp tool TO LOOK like the original crimps! I can see a recipient or owner replacing the backplate, but only a reproduction artist would try to make the replaced crimps look like the original crimps. Clearly an effort to deceive.
Do not confuse these with the crimps on the left of the clasp, these are totally textbook for a "waffle crimp" type of Deschler clasp.
Well, that was all I need to see to convince me that I was looking at a cleverly refinished badge. Another point to look for on refinished clasps is teh finish on the tip of the grenade head and bayonet. On any worn clasp, this area is surely to show some wear, but on this clasp is it 100% intact, a BIG red flag. And finally, the icing on the cake is that I can see some original zink bubbles on the reverse that have exploded in the past. Typical of original Deschler clasps, but what is not typical is the gold finish inside some of the bubbles! Impossible to find on clasps with the original finish intact.
Robert, the backplate on these does appear to be too low, but this is a typical feature of all Deschler Clasps (and Hobacher clasps btw.)
Thanks guys.
