              Hi Colorado (Steve, right?),

This one is a toughy. It may be a reproduction, but we will need to see the reverse clearly with the pin open and side shots of the hinge and catch to be sure. If it is an original, the pin has definately been replaced and possibly the backplate too, casting a very big shadow on the originality of the gold finish. I like the look of the finish on the obverse, but the finish on the reverse doesn't seem to match what we see on the obverse.

Based on these pics, my gut says and original clasp with replaced backplate and refinished to a gold grade.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Tom, your logic is sound of course . The pin does not have as much of a bubble in the middle as the ones in your book. Also, the plate does not appear to be tight. However, regarding the finish, if the badge was worn, the front would have more wear, correct? Or is it not the wear, but the color etc that you don't like?

                  Hi Harry,

I actually think the opposite. There is more wear on the reverse when rubbing up and down on the uniform IMO. I think the color is fine, but the reverse color doesn't seem to match the obverse color or even type of finish. Looks to me that the obverse finish is a type of wash, whereas the reverse almost looks plated. Strange and definately not typical for a wartime clasp IMO.

Tom, if a badge is pinned to your uniform, doesn't the catch and hinge keep the majority of it from actually touching the cloth? Except for maybe the bottom edge of the medal from the weight pulling it down.

The 2nd one also looks gold to me.
