Hi Don how long have you been using Vaseline for? Its always struck me as having the ability to De-stabalise the zinc and finish over a long period of time.

I use Ren Wax on my museum grade 'members'. It was manufactured JUST for these applications, where vasoline was made for the human body.

I got a special technique, I apply the vaseline on a soft brush and heat it up with a hairdryer(only heat the vaseline, not the badge!), then you can apply a very thin layer of vaseline, and you don´t have the problem of applying the acid of your skin.


I had no problems in retrospective, concerning the tarnishing of finish. For places dealing with high humidity like a sea or a shore nearby, in my opinion this is a good method. A perfect conservation, for another 70 years to come.

There's only 4% humidity where I live (on average). You can spit, and only half of it reaches the ground. Perfect for collectibles preservation. I'm thinking of starting a storage business for anyone with gold CCC's, APB's and numbered PAB's and GAB's.

Well, at least I could see what some of the nicer badges really looked like in hand, Tom.

I buy Renaissance Wax on Ebay in 65 ml size tin. It goes a long way. I mainly use it on my badges that have lost all of their finish to keep fingerprints and moisture away. It doesn't alter the appearance of the badge, and leaves a micro-thin protective dry layer over the metal. It's just perfect for those bare zinc badges prone to take on zincpect from moisture.

It is also excellent for dagger blades.

Do u use ren wax only on badges with no finish? what about badges with ie. 50% finish left?

In my mind, I can imagine that some of the remaining finish might be rubbed off when you remove the ren wax "leftovers" if you know what I mean

Guys, guys, guys, guys, and guys some more....vaseline again we speak of....well it has its pros and cons...the con being of course that it will make the finish on a badge look uneven, darken the finish, change/strip the finish etc....best I think only to use it on a badge with a finish that is already gone...

...at any rate an old Yoda of the hobby, a corner-stone of the collecting community, a pillar of our society, has taught me a secret of this hobby, a magical almost demonic method, something that I find much better to use than vaseline and much more effective and by golly it is fun too...I wonder if I should pass it on to you guys and myself become the Yoda?
