    Aircraft Destruction Badge

    Hello,

Does anyone here own an authentic Aircraft Destruction Badge?

I hear that there are no known photos of a Soldat wearing one and only a handful were officially awarded as the the award itself was not instituted until very late in the war.

I didn't even know they existed until the other day when I saw a repro version.

          Institution date of the award:

          12 Jan 45

Criteria was for the successful shooting down of an enemy aircraft with a hand held weapon.

          Found this website:

          http://axisawards.homestead.com/ribbons.html

It contains a 57 version of the ADB, so therefore in My opinion, if there is a 57 version of it, it MUST have officially existed...

This book contains a brief paragraph about the ADB:

          http://books.google.com/books?id=8RT...hl=en#PPA38,M1

The well researched and much respected feldgrau website lists it as an official award as well:

          http://www.feldgrau.com/awards.html

My book "Waffen-SS Uniforms in Colour Photographs" by Andrew Steven & Peter Amodio says that a few were officially awarded, but does not give any further info unfortunately.

          Still searching for more info...

Very well, succeed and you'll be worthy of an ADB in my eyes haha.

Here is what they look like in case anyone was curious (this is a 57 version to my knowledge and not an original).

                  Further update:

I found an old list of Panzer Aces and apparently one particular soldat by the name of Briedenbach was awarded the TDB as well as the ADB...

Does this last name sound familiar to anyone by chance?

Oh, just to clarify, above I mentioned that one could receive the ADB by successfully downing an enemy airplane with a hand-held weapon, but the exact criteria is:

"For shooting down an enemy airplane with small arms or a light machine gun."

The full name of the ADB was "Long-range Aircraft Destruction Badge".

It would appear they were awarded on paper only, and no actual examples were awarded. But like a lot of these late war awards, its kind of hard to tell if there were any prototypes made.

I know this is an old thread, but over in the 57er Awards forum the photo below of Major Peter Nebel (photo credit to WAF member Steve) appears to show two awards of the Aircraft Destruction Award on his ribbon bar. I thought I'd post it here for reference.
