GAB - The Real Thing ?

I received this GAB the other day direct from the family of the German vet. I realise it is possible that the vet had lost his original GAB(s) and went out and replaced it post-war and unknowingly picked up a fake and was wondering if anybody has seen a GAB like this one?
It has been pointed out to me that the fuller on the bayonet goes all the way back to the cross guard and the top two acorns point down instead of horizontally.

I am not sure, but it looks like the hinge has possibly been re-attached to the badge.
Any comments on this GAB - positive or negative?

    Hi Tim

I have seen a badge just like this one. I sent it back to the seller.

There was just to much about this badge that bothered me, so I decided to return it. Was I wrong? I feel I did the right thing.

Some of the issues I had:

    1) zero patina, it looked like it was made yesterday.

    2) the catch looked like a cup hook

    3) the hardware looked like it was held on with JB Weld

    4) a spot of rust where the hook of the pin touched the badge that was bright orange rusty. (rust in itself isnt a concern, but this looked like it wasnt there very long, like it was only just recently exposed to the elements)

    5) the way the head of the eagle was flush to the wreath. Design difference? I am not sure, had everything else been OK, I probably could have accepted it. Curiously, it had been about 2 years since I returned mine, and this is the first one I have seen that even came close to a resemblence.

    6) very sharp edges where it was stamped out.

Anyway, you guys take a look.

hinge. Notice the spot of bright orange rust. Odd that the only corrosion on the whole badge looked like it was fresh.

..and the catch. I initially bought this badge without looking at the reverse, because at that time I trusted the dealer. I cant say I would have even bothered had I seen these details.

            Hi Mark,

The one you have pictured and the one I have are very, very close - quite possibly the same.
In regards to your reasons why you sent your's back
            - No, this one certainly doesn't look like it was made yesterday with less than 30% silver left on the front and an overall dull zinc type colour to the remainder.
            - No, the catch on this one looks like a normal type catch and not like the one you have pictured.
            - No, the hinge and clasp do not have the same volume of excess solder as the one you have pictured.
            - No rust on this one.
            - Yes, the eagle's head is flush with the wreath.
            - No sharp edges - normal type edges for a hollow badge.

Considering that this one does not have the majority of the reasons with why you sent your example back - would you have made the same decision with this one?

Has anybody else got a similar GAB ?

Has anybody got a GAB the same that they know for certain is either Good or Bad?
Are there any other points with this GAB that are good or bad?

Just from gut feeling I´d say yours is a good one and Mark´s *might* be ok too. It is just weird that it looks so new. Mark held it in his hands, so I trust his opinion more than ours here.
But I can´t see anything wrong with yours, Tim.

                Cheers, Frank
