          Hi Ken,

yes very nice badge and a great finish still on it.

This is the variant Wernstein with different hinge type to the standard Wernstein.

We have discussed these before, I believe yours is the type without catchplate and with ? hook, am I right?
I can´t remember f it was Chet or Neil that also had one of these, there was some contoversy about it when he showed it as many people did not believe that zinc badge were produced without catchplates. I personally think it is OK though as the die charactaristics are identical to other Wernstein badges that I have seen, especially the head of the eagle is distinctive.
I have seen a lot of these Wernstein s with repaired catches and I think it is possible that there was a short period of time were Wernstein had no catchplates and simply attached the hooks directly to the badges, during wear these probably broke due to the small surface contact with the badge.

            Hi Guy's

            Yet another one

John if you think this badge is in good condition, your wrong. I'm glad to finaly see one with a little wear and discoloration to the finish.

These badges are widely available and always in mint condition both in bronze and in silver. The finish on these badges is superior to the ones with the normal üü setup. Like Skip stated they are probably OK because the overall details and flaws in the wreath are a perfect match to the other variant but I'm always wondering where they came from and if they were ever issued taken in to account there perfect condition.

              Phil is partly right.

On the internet these badges always seem to be bronze and in a unissued condition.
Don´t worry I have seen some grotty ones around, all be it always silver grade, mostly just in grey zinc without silver wash or plating, in fact I recently saw a whole bunch of unissued ones in a box, some still wrapped in paper. They were all the very thin type with standard Wernstein hinge and hook.

I wonder if somebody else has found a box of these unplated examples and is now galvanising them in bronze!
              I hope not.

                      Hi Ken,

sorry I did´nt post your pics, but I see you got Tyler to do it for you anyway.

I think both are authentic, we´ve seen these variation hinges and catches on PABs before, and Marcus posted a GAB with the same hinge, and lots of these IABs.

                        wernstein I.A.B.

the more I think about this the worse I feel about it. I tracked down some old threads on these "mint wernstein IABs" and from three different photos I beleive I see the same flaw. on mine the bronze one at the tail end of the left arm of the swaz. their is a line. my silver IAB does not have this nor do any of the wernstein IABs with the "corect" or what is the norm catch and plate. I am new to collecting this stuff but I would think this is not a good sign.
skip and phillip I would love to hear your opinion on this.

Hi Ken, I think the IAB is good. Frank H posted a bronze one on a thread a long time ago. It was not mint (as most are) but it had all of the same features as yours. I don't remember the thread but you could do a search and you will see what I am talking about.

                          Best wishes, Chet
                          Zinc stinks!

                            wernstein IAB

                            hey chet,
I found the thread from frank and mine is exactly like it. thats what bothers me, the same flaw on the near mint IABs with out catch plates, but i have never saw one on a wernstein that was not near mint. as I said Im new to this but I would think we would find this flaw on some older looking wernsteins and would find the flaw missing on some of the "near mint" ones, but every near mint one I have seen has this flaw.

                              Hello Ken,

first we should let the fellows know that you got this IAB from me.

All replys you got, tell you that the IAB is okay.

I think Philippe, Chet and Skip would not post their opinion if they are not sure about what they say. So I think they would not change their minds.

Maybe I´m wrong, but I think you are hoping for an negative answer to give me the badge back.

If you personly don´t like it, just sent it back and you will get your money back. Because this badge is original, I must subtract paypal fee and shipping costs. I think you will understand this.

I also think that it is no reason for a fake that they badges have the same flaws - of course they were made by the same pattern. Normaly we are searching for differences to unmask fakes and not for conformity.

I don´t want that anyone has "stomache-ache" with my badges.
So again - if you don´t like the badge, sent it back. I have no problem with it. I think this is a fair offer, isn´t it?

                              Best wishes

                              Joerg
