    Brother PABs ?

    Hi guys,

well I finally managed to get the silver Zimmermann to go with the bronze one, or did I ?

There are some slight differences, so what do you all think?

    Both from the same maker?

Skip, I think it's a match. The silver does have a bit more ware on it though. The catch not being the same size as the recieving area does not bother me. You can find this sort of mis-matched catch on many of Zimmermann's IAB's. Nice find.

            Hi Skip !
Is the silver one , really heavy worn ?
Looks like it dont have this sharp details on front .
But bronze brother is a great one .

              Hi Skipy,

I like to call these two "the odd couple".

It's clear that they are both good original badges but there are so many little differences between the two badges both on the obverse as on the reverse.

No wonder this is such a difficult hobby, when you think you'v seen it all there is still a new anomaly to discover. For me the most special feature is seen on the bronze one. I think it's the first Zimmermann I see with such a deep impression in the back that it leaves a brim arround the tank turret. The typical die flaw on the other hand is clearly vissible on the reverse of both badges.

I post my Bronze Zimmermann for comparison. In my opinion an early zinker because the die flaw is not yet visible. How does the finish on yours compare to mine. Is yours as bright as on this one.
Another thing I noticed is that the hinge on both your badges seems to sit a little lower then on mine or is that just the result of the photo angle.

                  Hi Skip,

IMO both of you badges are good Zimmermann pieces with the first style pin and catch arrangement identical to the JUNCKER PAB. There was some conjecture that the ones with no rings around the headlights were fake, but to my way of thinking, especially on your example, this is just wear, so that explains one of the differences on the front.

                  Philippe,

Yours is a VERY nice Bronze one, they are around with this much finish left on them, I did see a MINT one with all the gold left on it, but I was to late to get it. I also agree with you that it is an early one WITHOUT the die fault, 100% good original badge, this is easy to see, it is the same thing as the GWL Pilot's badges, the early ones do not have the die fault at 9.00 oclock.

I have scans of 6 different Zimmermann PAB's with different pin arrangements, one day I will put it all together and start a thread on them for all to see.

Here is a pic of my mint Silver one, the first of many different pin styles, but you can see where it was made to accept the Juncker pin, it also has a similar lip around the gun at the back.

                  Hope this all helps.

                  Regards,

                  Anthony

                      Hi guys,

I thought they were brothers right from the start, just the silver one has had a hard life.
Phil thats a really nice bronze tone on your PAB and the first I see without the die flaw. Anthonys is a real tasty example, don´t you think?
I don´t think they get mintier than this Still I must say that I prefer the one with the Juncker type hinge though.

                        Hi Anthony,

Do you make these PAB's yourself, or did you just encounter an old German in the woods, like I did

                        Amazing condition

                          Hi Guys,

Philippe, your post made me laugh thank you. I do like pieces in NICE condition, I once got accused of having a personal FROSTING machine for badges.

Here is a pic of a Bronze Zimmermann, this one shows the DIE fault just starting, so we have Philippe's example with no fault, then this one with it just starting, and so on to the full fault etc unfortunately not mine, it one turns up that nobody wants, please let me know, the CASH is ready.

                          Regards,

                          Anthony

I am still laughing, thanks Philippe
