    Recon. Casp help please

    Hi,
I would like to call on your expertise on this clasp. It appears repairs have been made on the catch and maybe the pin. Is the badge it self original and are the pin ,hinge and catch the type for this badge if it is original ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mitch

      Hello Mitch,

Their is more that woud concern me more about this example aside from the repairs.

      - The lay out of the piece is new to me (reverse) as well as the obverse.

      - I also do not like the finish on the pieceat all, as well as the eagle and the swaz, which IMHO are not properly shaped.

      - The hinge and catch i have seen before as crude but period repairs.

Here is a tomback example for comparison

      Just my 2 cents

      Best regards,
      JD

I am with Joe, I have never seen one of that design.

          Hi guys,
JD or Frank, thanks for the input. Could one of you explain what you mean about the obverse and reverse design differences ?Thanks again, Mitch

I have seen a couple of these with the thin veritical bar that the front "type symbol" is attached to, although this is the first Recon one I have seen. I believe that the others I have seen were genuine.
Personally, I don't like it - the clasp looks wrong, the holes break into the round wreath (normally just outside it), and usually the rivet to hold the eagles head passes through its eye.
Based on the fluted pin it would appear to be a late one but those were usually zinc and these days mostly found devoid of the original colour except for the pin and perhaps some of the reverse.
These aren't that hard to find so avoid one that you have doubts about.

              Dear Mitch,

We were talking about the eagle mainly. Check the feathers, eye and beak. They do not differ that much from maker to maker, but the one eagle on the clasp you show is very unusual.

              Cheers, Frank
