What are your thoughts regarding this badge. I recently purchased it from a very old collection. When I bought it, it had a heavy "marine" type varnish covering both the front and back. The only portions without this varnish were the hinge and pin.
At first I thought that someone had painted it gold because that is exactly how it looked beneath the varnish. Once the varnish was removed it was obvious that it was brass and was dingy in color. After very close inspection there was not a hint of silver anywhere, front or back, and I noticed that the couple of wear spots showed the typical early brass/tombak beneath a brass plate. The badge was made this way as the hinge and catch shows soldering over the brass plate and the pin is typical nickle silver.
The wear spot on the butt of the rifle does not show very well because my camera can not take good close ups.
Was this a Mech. Infantry badge that may have had a darker patina applied (although there is no trace of it) or what may it have been?
Thanks,
Chuck
