......if it is not a new FAKE by the African hero then it looks like a original with a heavy refinish. Details seem to be missing or softer than usual, such as the bayo, talons and acorns. Those details could just as easily been buried under a refinishing job.
It would be simpler to tell with the badge in hand, but from your images this would be my evaluation.

Bruce - It appears refiinshed at first glance, yes, but I believe it to be the original one (just a very heavy finish due to nearing end of the shift or sth.
) - as you say - hard to tell not holding it in hands. the light here right now is less than sufficient to take another picture right now, but I'm back and I will post more pix soon. Thanks for your comment!

I don't know, I like to compare photos of certain parts of a badge to get a good comparison between everything posted. I'll have to say, the spotty finish on the reverse of your badge, Rainer, is odd - especially with a totally mint piece. ???
Does the maker mark on yours look smaller, Rainer, than the others? Or should that matter?

Maybe i'm being paranoid here but I have a bad feeling about this one, I've seen too many (perfect fakes) from the Hero, the finish looks to perfect while the reverse looks pitting, maker mark looks to small, overall lack of detail, eagles head is different in my opinion, but like I said maybe i'm just seeing things.

Den and Bruce - Well - let's do the best to find out if this guy is 60+ years old. Anything to find out the truth, boys! Whatever the case, the layer of finish is definitely thicker than usual, especially in the top area.
Good eye, Robert - the MM seems a little different indeed. I'll take closeup pix of that and the eagle you mentioned, Den, later on an post them. Any suggestions of testing, areas to photograph....?
I'll also take another closeup of the area behind the hinge to see if it shows pitting. I don't hold it in hands right now, The badge is upstairs, but after a night of Texas Hold 'em and Whiskey, please excuse me for my recovery process before I post.....

Good idea to post some additional pics, it's always good to discuss a badge, one cannot be causious enough these days, could be that the badge was refinished, could you make a closeup of this piece of the badge.
