    Hymman unmarked IAB

    Hi all
Picked this up this morning. Sorry for poor pics. A nice unmarked Hymman IAB with the hinge and catch crimps (i will use the word 'star' for this rather than 'sphincter'!!)
Having looked at other threads on this badge there seem to be Hymman 3 types.

-Hollow type with rectangle plate hinge.

-Solid zinc with 'star' crimped catch and non crimped hinge. These come with the L/53 marking and the dimples from the mould pressing.

-Solid zinc type with both hinge and catch 'star' crimped. Flat backed (no dimples) and these are unmarked.

From what I can see the obverses are the same design without the swaz. cutout.

    Here are some pics.
How rare are these examples ??

This is another link discussing this badge.

      Hi Richard,

      Good observation.

The hollow Hymmens can be found in zink and tombak. Tombak ones always have a blockhinge (which they also used on the early tombak PAB's). Zinkers can be found with the rectangular catchplate OR with the blockhinge as well (probably when they changed their production from tombak to zinc they used there last blockhinges).

Then you have the marked pieces like the one you have. The hinge and catch will always be crimped but some pieces don't have the "star" markings like you call them.

I wouldn't know whether Hymmen produced their IAB's also with the lower and higher L/53 mark like on the PAB's, probably not as there isn't too much space around there.

Anyhow, a nice original and very disarable badge, especially in a condition like yours.
      Kind regards,
      Giel

        Hi Richard

Giel covered the Hollow badges, but the solid badges have a little more variation than you pointed out.

The flat style reverse, which have been seen with "star" crimping on both hinge and catch have shown up marked and unmarked.

The dimpled reverse more often shows up as you pointed out, with the catch "star" crimped and hinge not "star" crimped, but they have been seen with both hinge and catch "star" crimped.

IMO the dimpled reverse design may have had the hinge crimping tool break down at some stage in its manufacturing life and they found this was not necessary.

So there were possibly at least 3 reverse dies, dimpled, flat with maker mark and flat without maker mark.

I only recall seeing the maker mark in one place on IABs, Giel might be thinking of the GABs which have two distinct areas for the mark.

        regards
        Graeme
