    Wurster PAB - Opinion

As per Dennis's request I have placed this Wurster PAB up for discussion. It is alleged to be a possible "African Hero" Repro. Please comment.

It was very difficult taking pics of the badge for my lighting was not so good.

    Kind Regards
    Mike

Yes, what exactly is wrong with the badge? The pin and the catch look a little odd, but if I saw this at an arms show, I'd still look upon it as real.

The pitting on the lower left of the reverse for starters. Almost always a sign of casting. The pin/hinge/catch are not correct for this maker. Do a search on this forum and you will find many original examples. Same with the Hero. Search here and in the Collector Community forum using "Hero" or "African Hero" and see what you find.

I think this fake KWM is hard to tackle, but I believe it's fake. As Don pointed out, the pitting marks on the back are common on the Afrikaheld KWM copies (though not universal), and I personally haven't seen pitting like that on a real KWM PAB. The pin is not formed exactly right, nor does the catch seem to be mounted as the norm of a good KWM.

To me, the biggest giveaway is the finish. Wurster used several types of finishes on zinc PABs, but none looked just like that. Lastly, if you held this one in your left hand and a good one in your right hand, you could "feel" the difference. It's hard to explain, but this series of fakes "feels wrong" - the metal often feels almost oily or slippery.

The bottom line is that with fakes like this out there, it takes a great deal of experience to know the difference, even when you can examine them in person. These are made to deceive, and I think 99 out of 100 people who picked one up at a show would think it was good. I would be the same way with LW badges, with which I have no experience.

If you have the opportunity to closely examine those that are acknowldeged to be good originals, that's best. Plenty of research on this and other forums is essential.

                Best,
                Greg

This is how a real one looks like...

I have to disagree with you Don, If Afrika Man keeps making these kind of fakes, I wouldn't be worried. Know the items that you buy and you won't get burned...

                      To All!

NO worries! Thanks for the help! I am sure the dealer who I origianally purchased it from will accept it back.

                      Kind Regards
