    GAB: can someone please explain this badge for me?

    Hello all

    Further to the thread on the most misunderstood badge, I'd like to take it a little further by seeing if anyone here can clarify exactly what sort of action gained the award of the GAB .

    My guesses are:

    Artillery
    self propelled gun

    but then after that I get a bit fuzzy.

    Were the crew of tankhunters due the GAB or the PAB?

    what about Mortar troops? or is that the IAB?

    If anyone can please lst for me other personal who could be awarded the GAB I would be most appreciative.

    hello dave here is a quote from page 96 of (german combat badges of the third reich)
    a gap in the enemy's line must be cleared before the main attack can begin.
    although breaching fortifications,laying artillery barrages,and building bridges wasn't as "glamorous" as the exploits of the infentry and the panzer units,duties of the engineers,artillery,and other support personel were crucial to the success of the german army. many of these operations were performed under direct enemy fire and rarly acknowledged.this sitiation resulted in the creation of the General Assault Badge,recognizing the efforts,accomplishments,and heroism of these soldiers-commonly the first on the field of battle.displaying the tools of the "Stosstrupp" a crossed bayonet and grenade this badge embodies the spirit of offensive tenacity common to all assault troop missions

      Scorched earth is right as far as I know, anyone no Panzer/Infanterie was capable of receiving the GAB, for instances, like on my tunic, a Nebeltruppe officer candidate has the GAB.

      A list to me for GAB is :

      Cavalary
      Mortar
      Nebeltruppe
      Artillerie
      Engineers
      ...

          If I am not mistaken some administrative and non-combatants troops were also eligible

          for example

          Chaplains
          Medics
          Quartermaster troops
          Railway Troops?
          SD (Secutity Police) Troops?

          Oh by the way I think

          Cavalary
          Mortar

          were infanty troops so they would not normally get the GAB??
