Day Fighter Clasps - Cased - Opinions Please

    Hi Everybody,

I've been offered these two day fighter clasps, both unmarked, one in silver, the other gold, and both with cases.

I've been offered them once before but I didn't feel comfortable with them and so turned them down. However, that was before I knew about this great forum. Consequently, before dismissing them once again, I'd like to ask your opinions on them.

I notice on the silver one that there is pitting to the reverse. But could this just be late war or is it a post-war casting? The pins on both have shear marks down their length. The silver one is without the winged arrow cover plate.

    Thanks for your time.

    All the best,
    Toby.

      And the reverse, pin-up:

(Note the small mark on the arrow-end, much like a raised 'O')

                Hi Toby,

Don't take a decision on what I'm going to say, it's just an observation based upon the pictures you show but I handeld to little of these clasps to be of great help.

The first thing I noticed when looking at the pics was the realy thin wreath and also the skinny arrow. When I compare those features to others that I think are ok, then this is something that realy jumps in the eye. On other clasps it's my impression that the wreath is much ticker and the arrow almost fills out the complete inside of the wreath.

But like I said, just an observation and nothing more.

                  Philippe,

Thanks for replying. Interesting point. I've made a comparison with a known original that I have (hadn't thought to compare arrow sizes before) and there doesn't seem to be any great difference, maybe a fraction less.

                  What does anybody else think?

                  All the best,
                  Toby.

I think you have good instincts and should go with your initial thoughts.

Just my opinion, but I'm pretty sure those are fake cases too.

                      Hi Toby,

Thought I just post one pic to underline what I was trying to say

Tim: Thanks. I suppose there is a lot to be said for going with first instincts.

Philippe: Thanks for posting the picture. I think I see what you mean. It looks to be more apparent on the Silver, which has a whole different style of arrow altogether.

                        All the best,
                        Toby.

                          Postscript:

I'm not sure how relevant this is but on neither of the badges is the hinge-spring long enough to be effective. In fact no tension whatsoever is created. Certainly not a sign of a well-made badge.

                          Toby.
