A little late there mate I've had this for probably 15 years now! I got it cheap from a garage sale so it doesn't bother me if it's not real. I just want to know for sure. So far you have said what I allready know and yes there is a lot of baggage that these have, but that doesn't address this badge. If it's bad, say what is bad with it, and I will be very happy with that and will then happily post it in the fake badge section for others to learn from.
GaryOriginally posted by Eric Sowersby View PostSorry, I don't like it. There is to much baggage that comes along with this type of badge. I would look else where if you are looking to buy.

That was one of my concerns as well. But in the Previtera book they show similar thickness, but are the badges they used real or not? There are so few photo references for these that it is hard. The badge is die struck, has zinc rot, but the pin assembly is what I see on F&BL badges not the W.H. badges. It is a quandry.
Cheers

Gary, I have never seen one that was proven to be real. Conversely I have never seen one proven to be fake, only that collector lore says they are bad because W.H. supposedly didn't make them. Detlev shows one in his price guide that he asserts is good. I'm travelling right now or I would scan it for comparision. Perhaps somebody else could....pseudo-expert

I present you with the badge pictured in Detlev's catalogue page 615. Full size and MM closeup.
GaryOriginally posted by Raytheman View PostWell, it also has the 'egg-shaped head' seen from the back of the medal. Also the space between head ans wing is not as 'pronounced' as it should be.
Last ; WH as a mark is not bad but WH WIEN is..Attached Files

I have gone back and forth between these two badges for a week now and they have the same maker mark as far as I can tell. Even the "N" is slightly lower on both of them. My question is once again(basically) is the one in Detlev's catalogue real? If it is then so is mine. If it's not then so too is mine. Please note the egg shaped head on Detlev's as well.

Hi Gary,
You indeed have that one badge that you don't want to have.
I am sure as well these WH Wien badges are no good, though you see them sell at different dealer sites once in a while. I'm we have never saw an acceptable Hobacher army flak badge in the past.
I think it would be very interesting to have a serious discussion about these badges and about Hobacher, but I wouldn't really know where to start.
I know of someone who says he owns a good Hobacher army flak badge. At the time I saw it I didn't really take a good look at it, but I will contact him later this evening and ask him to post it here.Kind regards,
Giel
