    Stu,

This is a good reference site for you as I remember you stating that you only wanted tombak/buntmetal badges for your collection (good idea, but would miss out on some great items)

    Anyhow, check this out:

    Hope this helps some!

      Thanks for the link.

      Hi William,

Thanks for the link. Lots for me to learn there.

Also, I have revisited my thoughts on bunt metal only. Reason I stayed away from the zinc items before was because of the heavy bubbling I saw on some. Now that I have seen how some of them retain their finish without bubbling I realize I will miss out on some good items such as this AS PAB if I limit myself to bunt metal only.

      Regards,
      Stu

        Stu,

The cause of zincpest, or the corrosion process, is a complex subject. In most cases a good badge can be preserved in it's mint condition by keeping it away from a humid environment/moisture. I handle my zinc pieces with white gloves to keep my oily hands from the surface. I store them away in as dry an atmosphere as possible. There's a lot to learn about corrosion prevention, many fine threads on the forum covering this topic. Limiting yourself to just tombak pieces is limiting yourself from well over half the badges made during the TR. I try and collect the best-conditioned badges as I can, and do my best to see to it that they stay that way by following some basic guidelines.

          Thanks Robert

          Hi Robert,

Thanks for the info and the glove idea. I will pick some up. Saw some soft white cotton ones at a local photo shop recently. They should probably be appropriate. I also recall that we have a Conservation section on the forum. To date I have not spent any quality time there but now that I have a few items it's time I did. Will start this evening when all is quiet and the grandkids have gone back to the parents.

          Regards,
          Stu

            Hello,

@ Stu - This isn't a problem and it is a good site; Robert does great work.

@ Robert - I have seen your white gloves in a few photos and I know you collect mint items while I like the items that went through WWII - thus you don't need gloves to play around with them.

              Will,

I think the worn pieces you are referring to need even more care than the mint pieces because the base metal is exposed on them! I wear the gloves on all of my pieces to keep my body chemicals off of the pieces. I've seen too many nice silver CCC's and numbered PAB's and GAB's with zincpest to take any chances. And I wash my gloves often.
