    GAB Assmann '2'

    Hi,

This Assmann '2' GAB came out of the 'Stuttgart Hoard' that was recently found, which included Assmann's late war zinc badges nos. '1, 2, 3 and 4'.

There is some blue wrapping paper stuck to the catch. Best left alone.

    For the archives...

    Robert

"six italians, dressed in rather unusual diving suits and equipped with materials of laughably little cost have swung the military balance of power in the Mediterranean in favour of the Axis".

                  Hi,

I'm really glad you posted your badge for discussion. I've been reading through Frank Heukeme's book on the various Assmann GAB's, and see that the examples he has listed in his book all have the same pin as yours, the bent wire affair. These 'Stuttgart Horde' badges have a different, possibly a later-war design. I suppose it to be something Assmann finally ended up producing at the end of the war. Any thoughts on this?

                    Hi Robert,
The "Stuttgart Horde" are the late war designs.
Here is the early type of Assamann, you will notice the silver finish is different too.

                              Thanks,

The finish IS really different. So these 'Stuttgart Horde' GAB's were the last run during the war. Regarding these new pins, I don't think were cast - I can see the evidence of 'heat-bending' on the top section by the hinge. But maybe they were a maluable steel casting that could be heated and bent. One member's pin on his badge broke as he opened it, which seems quite odd for a steel pin asembly. Perhaps that particular pin had an internal flaw??? Or maybe it IS a cast steel. Something to investigate further.

                              Thank you,
                              Robert
