    GAB Questioned

I recently sold a GAB to a customer, who is challenging the authenticity of the piece. Not wanting to sell a fake, I told him I would post it on the forum. Here is the listing:

    http://www.craiggottlieb.com/data/in...rman+Militaria

Here is the piece, in case you don't want to link to the item.

Thank you in advance for an honest and informed debate. I personally believe it to be good, but I do not know all of the "Flock" fakes that are known, so I can certainly be wrong on this.

This GAB is found in Franks book-but it is a Fake made in England, Frank found out to late to make changes, Skip in Berlin knows the guy who makes them...at the GCA forum it was just discussed yesterday-you can see I also was a victim.

          Hi Jeff,
I can't tell from the reverse picture but would this be the sc "Y" fake?

This is one reason I really appreciate the forum, as a dealer. Contrary to what other dealers might say, I find the "vetting" process (both pre- and post-sale) that you guys perform to be an invaluable part of my business. Yes, we successfully vet 99% of everything we sell, but occaisonally, something will slip by. And when it does, I'm very glad you all discover it, so there are not "bombshells" waiting to go off someday down the road.

The reverse of this piece makes a good study of typical artificial aging you see on fake badges.

Interesting that this one made it into the book.

Until recently it was believed to be good. Now we know better.
Chet, this is not the "Y" fake.

                  Good Job Craig

                  Hi Craig,
I admire you for your trying to keep things right. With all of the high quality fakes out there it makes it hard for people who collect specific badges, medals, etc. to stay on top of the fakes let alone dealers who handle a wide range of items. You were called on something and your making it right by using a very valuable source of info, the guys who know on WAF .
This shows character as a dealer, there is not a collector out there that does not have his box of "crap" they have purchased .
                  Bill

I have one of these and it's considered to be a fake.

One of the give aways is the bayonet grove - both ends are square.

However, the clasp has some real nice shear marks on it too just to give it a degree of authenticity.

I think my photo shows the square bayonet grove better than Craigs.

                          Regards ...
