    Die Flaw Progression

    Gents,
I am a bit puzzled by this and ask for thoughts. I hope it is OK that I post a Luft badge to ask this general question as I figure we get more action here in Heer.

So looking at the ball-hinge it has a die charachteristic on the leaf left of the breech where the leaf is malformed and almost bitten into. This is a charachteristic of ALL, whether Neusilber, zinc, or Tombak.

BUT, on the bottom there is a leaf where ONLY the Neusilber and Tombaks have a small pimple die-flaw and the zincs do not! This bugs me as I would figure the zinc would be later, and OK, maybe you make a new die because the original breaks. But if that was the case then the leaf on the left would be fixed too.

Perhaps at a later date when zinc started they brushed out the pimple, but other than this can anyone think of anything?

    Thanks,
    Marc

Hi Marc, the badges you show come from two completely different dies. Just look at some of the other details. Such as the handwheel or the rivets to the gun.

    Cheers, Ade.

You´ld have to go into how the dies were made. There would have certainly been two different dies for the different materials. Although these may well have been constructed to the same design this design could well be at a different revision. Corrective actions, product improvement, manufacturing needs or simply a different die carver could be responsible for what you are seeing. Namely; Broad similarities but different dies. Its not apples and oranges but its certainly two different species of apple.
