    Bad GAB

This one is no good! Closer inspection revealed why.

Badge looked "too new" which sounded alarm bells, but I still proceeded with trade of items. Detail looked right, and hinge and catch looked good also.

I got home and reached for Frank's book and my worst fear was realized...
A fake! and a good one IMO! Look at the fault in the bayonets hilt.... the Y shape! Repro #8.... enjoy!

I wish these days were over! I have 5 other items in trade that look good and are returnable so nothing lost, but a lesson learned! Don't let your guard down!.... And bring the book with you! It does less good at home!

              Dear Mike,

Glad to know the book helped, even if it was "in retroperspective." That is indeed a dangerous fake. I fell for the darker example of the two I show in my book, so don******180;t feel too bad. If one does not have knowledge of that Y-fault and no original BH Mayer to hold it next to (it is smaller in size), it is impossible to detect this fake.
I made the book relatively small in format so that one can take it along to shows.
              Cheers, Frank
