    Silver Panzer Assault Badge

I believe this badge to be original, but before placing on E-stand, I'd appreciate verification of authenticity. No maker mark that I can see.
Also, what do these sell for these days?

              Hi Don,

I agree it's getting more and more of a gamble judging badges based on pics alone but somehow I like to think that in this case you and the others were correct giving it tumbs up.

The pics posted by Ernst are good enough to see that this badge is made out of real zinc, a bit corse and nothing like the smooth appearance of Marcus's example.

Of course it features a known set-up and the tone of the finish also is in line with known originals.

Further more have a look at the scratch mark left by the pin on the right side of the catch. In this case the exposed metal turned dark as it should be. On Marcus's example the pin also left such a mark only to leave the exposed shiny base metal visible.

That being said it would be great if everytime a badge was posted up for opinion that the correct measurements would accompany it. However I'm very well aware that this is wishfull thinking. Even if everybody used the same tool we would never be sure that the badges were measured in the same way.

Good morning Philippe. Having watched the Daisy fake change over the last two years and now the Porsche I think we are in trouble. Between high qualitity fakes and refinished worn original badges this hobby is slowly going to die. Don't the fakers realize that once we can no longer tell the difference between good and bad that it will all end? Having said that I still have a few good ones left for sale on the estand (shameless plug).

                  Hi Don,

We indeed are reason the more to keep doing your homework. More and more it will become difficult to reach a conclusion based upon pictures alone. However based upon my personnal experience once you have the opportunity to study the badge carefully (not something you would be able to do at a show) an compare it two known originals from your own or a friends collection you will be able to disguise these things for what they really are.

With ever rising prices it was to be expected that fakers would clean up their acts. With all the new stuff hitting the markets chances, also for experienced collectors, to make mistakes will rise, but at the end of the day I still like to think that the perfect fake didn't arrive yet.

                    Hi Don,

It will not all end. There is a huge number of collectors living in a parallel universe who do not really care about the whole fake vs. original thing. They just buy what they think "looks old." Germany has a lot of these collectors and I guess all other countries too. Guys like that cannot even be considered real collectors, they just want to own something from WWII.

The ones who usually knew how to distinguish between good and bad might stop in frustration, unless they bring their knowledge also one step further. Which, I admit is getting difficult and becomes more of a profession than a fun hobby.
                    Cheers, Frank

Hi Frank, that is very depressing to hear because it means that the fakers will win in the end. A hobby is supposed to be fun.

                        Hi Don,

One day very few people will be able to determine what is right and what is wrong. It already starts if one follows other forums, a lot of confusion and even perfectly original (and common!) items declared as fakes as a consequence. People are startled by the new, excellent fakes. Looking at the quality of those fakes, they now begin to question originals made in a more slobby way.
                        Cheers, Frank

Very true Frank but I fear the day when some of these guys will try to come in to our "universe".

I don't see this happening in the near future but in a decade or two some of them will try to climb over the doorstep armed with their "old collections" If at that time there is nobody arround to show/proof the dark origines of there badges I foresee big trouble.

                            Hi guys,
In my simple universe it all falls down to one question: how many variables I’m ready to accept when thinking about acquiring badge for my collection? Everyone should know answer to this question before spending any kind of money.
BTW - i have no problems with badge posted by Ernst. IMO original Daisy.

THANKS FOR AFFIRMATIONS!!! I'm especially impressed by the thorough examination by Philippe DB of the 'pin scratch' on the reverse. You guys should rename this Forum 'ASI' for 'Abzeichen Scene Investigation'- the collector's version of CSI!!!
