    Buntmetall hollow Porsche PAB?

    Hi Guys,

Little question? Who owns a hollow buntmetal Porsche PAB. With buntmetal I mean made out of yellow Brass/tombak.

If you do I would very much appreciate to see pics of it.

    Many thanks in advance.

Interesting. I've never seen one. Are you following a hunch Philippe?

        Dear Frank,

Well yesterday eveing I came to the conclusion that at least for now I don't own a BM Porsche.

I just bought an upgrade (not yet in) for my "suposed" BM porsche and before passing my example on to another PAB addict, took a last look at it.

Much to my surprice I noticed that this wasn't a BM badge but a heavy coated zinker just like the GAB type 1.23.1 you feature in your book on pages 258/259. Even in your description of the badge you wrote "Often mistaken by collectors as tombak badges"

So clearly I made this mistake myself and took a closer look at the badge I'm expecting. Based on the wear pattern on the wreath band i'm rather confident that this also wil be a coated zinker.

I'll post my example first. Focus on the eagles neck area and the worn points of the left panzer track here you can clearly see the zinc peeping through.

The zinker set-up on these badges all of a sudden make a lot more sense too

Here is the badge I'm expecting to arrive. Focus on the top of the wreath band. Based upon the pics I'm inclined to think that there will also be zinc to be found there.

Now for badge number 3, Skips example. This badge is in very good condition with only slight wear to the highpoints.

Based upon these pics and upon the bordeaux red discoloration I tought this also was a heavy coated zinker. However Skip was so kind to do some "destructive" testing and is convinced that it is solid BM. If this indeed is the case, and at least the early set-up is a hint in that direction, then this would be the only true BM Porsche I know of.

@Scott I don't have your badge in my files but I'm sure you'll come to the rescue with some good pics.

So now you're missing another Porsche varient Philippe? Still these coated PAB's are very attractive badges for sure.

Great thread Phil. It is worth to note that early zinc solid PorschePAB received buntmetall coating as well. IMO this absolutely puts any speculations about 2 different PorschePAB’s makers to sleep.
@Skip’s badge – dear Skip it just makes me wonder how “deep” you tested your badge. It looks like on these hollow badges coating is really thick…

some quick questions-is this your PAB formally known as a 'messing'-bet your PAB attic who getting that badge doesn't have that in his files...also what weight are these zinkers, last will there ever be found a catch that is just wire soldered onto a zinker like you find on the NS versions...

                          Hi Jeff,

                          Yet that's the badge Jeff.

Concerning Scott's badge, IMO that is not a BM badge. There was some controversy arrround this badge and at one moment it ended up with me. IMO it's absolutely original but one of the "later" "early" versions. The difference with the very early NS versions is that these badges received a finish over their base metal. Although still high quality material was used it's not the exact same material as the first of the true NS Porsches.

I think it's rather important that we are able to make up our mind in relation to the existance of BM hollow Porsches since Frank needs to decide if this is a distinction he will mention in his book. If they indeed were made there should be more of them then only Skip's example.

I have personally handled and photographed Skip`s example and had no doubt that it was made from Tombak.
                            Cheers, Frank

I scratched it quiet deeply on the very bottom of the wreath, under the tie, it appears to be buntmatal through and through which the setup certaily speaks for.
Also the silver plating is not as "white" as on the versions with catchplate. Phil could be right, these might be heavily plated zincers. We should certainly know more when you have the other one Phil.
