Please, please, please do not like these cut out badges too much and stop the hype. I can see an army of smalltime idiot dealers cutting out PABs of any shape, form and maker in order to sell one of the "rare specimen." If it hasn******180;t started already.
Just tell yourself that in a very strict sense, the badge has been ruined!
    Cheers, Frank

      Dear Frank,
I'm afraid that it is already too late to stop the hype. Our African friend and his buddy’s know exactly what is going on with cut outs. This picture was taken at one of the shows here in Chicago at the end of the last year. All these PAB's are fakes of course, but it shows us that they know what they are doing...

I know that Robert, I am just afraid they will start to modify good unruined originals.
        Cheers, Frank

Interesting picture Robert...the two on the bottom clearly show acid residue....It is only a matter of time...I am sure though that the fools will not ruin original badges (unless they start going for ridiculous prices)...I guess we will know for sure if we start seeing a lot more showing up...I for one have never been fortunate enough to own one.

The only way to stop this is to control prices. If we will refuse to pay more for cut out PAB's compared to what we are paying for "normal" PAB's, they will have no motivation to fool around with good old PAB's and saw blades...at least i hope...

              Hi Guys,

Well since it was me that started the hype I can only try to make it disappear again.

Based upon my ONE cut-out grass PAB with provenance and an explaination for the reason of the cut-out diectly from the vet himself, "distinguishing between experienced vets and younger soldiers", there for me "was" a reason to hold these badges in high esteem.

However since our last thread on the subject and a picture posted by Jacques we now know that cut-out badges made their appearance as early as June 1940, just shortly after the institution of the PAB.

So at this moment it's impossible to make the link between merit and the modification. Due to a complete lack of other eyewithness accounts we just don't know what the reason for the modification was and it very well could have been nothing more then a fashion statement.

If the later is indeed the case then I see no reason, apart from personnal preference, to pay a premium for these badges.

That being said, with prices for Nickel silver Porsche PAB's reaching the €400 mark, chances are zero that somebody will try to modify a good badge in such a way. On the other hand I agree with John, we should be very carefull with worn down "hollow" zinkers by common makers.

All things considered, not being able to find a bullet proof answer to the why of these cut-outs for me is one of the most frustrating experiences in my collectors career

                Hi Guys !
Price of the shown NS "Porsche" with cutout was € 170,- , even with a secondary pin I find that to be a reasonable price for the PAB . Why all this mess about prices ???
I have "some" mint and near mint NS "Porsche" PAB`s , so I was hunting for one with cutout . And I think this was a OK deal .

                    Thanks !
