    Eagle detail on my 50 bronze GB PAB. The bronze finish has 75% evaporated (actually micro-flaked away). There is a slight difference in the beak and a noticable increase in the amount of handwork around the edge of the badge. Zincpest is a problem on this badge.

      Acorn and number 50 box on the bronze GB PAB. You will notice that the 'cap' of the acorns have completely different and more large crosshatching. it is the most noticeable difference between the badges. The tank treads are perfect, as are those on my solver examples.

      Both of the badges were gotten from the same veteran, in 1978 or 1979, in Waterloo, Iowa, along with numerous other medals, badges, cloth insignia, flags and armbands. I will double check my poor records, but it could have been 1978 or 1979.

        Your absolutely correct and this is the main reason for starting this thread.

        GB numbered PAB's are a complete and utter mess and absolutely nobody knows his way arround anymore. The only knowledge is that their are good fakes out their.

        Only one kind of people benefitting from this, you guessed it right the crooks. Only very few collectors even dare to touch a GB because of this and IMO these badges deserve better. We just have to clean the stabbles first and give them back the place they deserve. Afterall how many makkers of grade II and III PAB's do you know.

            I agree with Phillipe wholeheartedly. I have always thought of my badge that it is a little work of art. Fabulous detail, a joy to look at, even with most of the original finish missing. best wishes,

              Now we are getting somewhere. What you describe indeed is the most noticable difference between the badge that started this thread and quite a few very believable and most likely original badges.

              There is however a problem with this difference and that is how to explain it.

              I think what we need to do first is go in to detail on these crosshatching patterns to see if there are one or more patterns to be found. Based upon what we will discover we then can try to reach some conclusions.

              However that will be for tomorrow.

                One problem I see as I look at these badges that dealers have for sale is a lack of quality pictures to examine the fine details.

                  A great thread! I'd like to point out that the badge being referred to as my badge actually belongs to Skipper, I just took the photos. Since I don't have the badge, I can't answer any questions. Hopefully Skipper will drop by later.

                    Interesting Bob. It appears that all the silvers posted have the finer crosshatching. Hopefully some more examples will appear for us to examine.

                      The badge attributed to Larry is actually one of mine...He just took the photos. I will either:

                      1.) Try to get some better photos of the details, or
                      2.) Get the badge to Larry so he can take the photos

                      Either way, will try to get something posted in the next few days, but I can say that the detail to the eagle's claws and the acorn caps is not as crisp as those posted here by Bob and Philippe.

                      This may really confuse things, as we will be talking about two different "Skip's badge" 's.

                          Have you guys noticed the dipping 5 on the Larry Lipps/Skipper Greenwade PAB? This is also something that the one from Weitze don´t have.

                              It would also be great if some collector who bought one of the mint GB PABs that were on offer some 4 years ago at Der Rittmeister's site could post one in detail. Here is an example, back then posted by member JMD.

                                Even on these low quality pictures it is easy to notice very specific pin detail and catch, known to us from Phil's and Skip's badges...
