            Hi Sven,

Could you take the same picture from the opposite angle so that we can see the inside. It's already obvious from this pic that the entire outlining of the inner rifle but is missing.Exactly in that area the oakleve would have been attached.

Sorry Sven didn't see that you were still posting.

The pictures arent really that clear but based upon what I can see I remain with my first opinion.

I think posts 31 and 32 show a lot "going on" in the area we are discussing. Some parts of that area definitely do not look like the original surface....

                regards

Good thread. I can see Phil and Graeme's point...........but at the same time I find it odd that the zinc rot would have attacked the oakleaf area so perfectly and completely without showing more signs on the rifle and wreath.

Greg has a very good point!

                      Hi Greg,

                      Take a closer look

Frist at picture 30 the zinc rot took away a piece of the tip of the bayonet leaving the rest in tact.

Also take a look at pic 32. Here the zink rot took an entire pice of the underside of the K98 outlining. Then in the same picture take a look at the part of the rifle butt that would have integrated the oak leaf part. It is COMPLETELY rotten away, there just is nothing left to hold that leaf. Even it the pics are very out of focus you can also see zinc rot on the part of the rifle sling that would have given support to the other site of the leaf.

Looking at these zinc rot traces in these areas, taken in to account that we have seen hundreds and hundreds of BH Mayer F&R design zinc IAB's all with that oak leaf in place and further taken in to account that this is a cleaned ground dug badge (the part could easely have been broken of in the cleaning process without the guy doing the cleaning ever noticing it because it was incorporated in a larger piece of dirt, possibly also explainng the rather course looking missing part in the outlining of the K98 butt) I really see no reason why we should, at this point, take a second die with missing oak leaf in to consideration.

Show me half a dozen more and I might change my mind.

Sure looks like there was something here to me as well.

Like Phil says, why have we never seen any others of this design were the leave is missing.

                            Guys,

you might be right but we can only asume that the oakleaf was there before the zinc got attacked while lying in the ground. There is no way to tell if the leaf was present while it was distributed back then, for all we know it could also be a productionflaw that got thru.

I don´t either beleave in a second die either.

Philippe, i find your demand of seeing a half dozen more a bit hilarious since both you and i know that we wouldn´t find even one more with the same kind of "damage" on a bodenfund as Sven´s badge is showing.
                            Regards
                            Hans N

                                Hi Sven

My last thoughts on this are that quite possibly the "missing leaf" was there when found, but in a very bad state. The finder may have tidied it up by removing the ragged parts by following the lines of the butt and sling. The edges mentioned are definitely not the original lines of the butt and sling...

                                interesting find

                                regards
