makers marks

Hello everyone,
This may seem like a novice question, but I am a novice when it comes to badges. I was sitting around today thinking about badges, more specifically IAB's and GAB's, and their makers marks. These questions came to mind: Are makers marks more common on early badges? When did makers start not marking their badges? Did makers stop marking badges to protect their identity? Any thoughts are appreciated

I have often wondered the same thing and there just doesn't seem to be much ryhme or reason..........why mark some and not all. One crazy thought I had recently was that maybe the marked badges were sold to distributors and distributors sold themand then according to consumer demand for particular designs...........certain makers produced more then others..........all just speculation and fantasy most likely.
